The California Department of Motor Vehicles only wants to make sure every driver in the Golden State stays safe on the road, given that there will be a new requirement for the drivers to be extra vigilant.
So here are some New Laws in 2023 that you have to watch out for.
Online Driver’s License Renewal 70 Year Old (AB 174, Committee on Budget)
In California law will ask drivers 70 and above to renew their license in-person. Sounds pretty inconvenient to me but whatever. At least it gives the elders a chance to leave the house.
New Requirement for Permanent Disableds (SB 611, Hill, 2017)
The DMV is telling Californians to confirm that they are still disabled. Otherwise, the DMV will not renew placards. Seems fair enough
Notices for Semiautonomous Vehicles (SB 1398, Gonzalez)
Dealers selling new passenger vehicles with a driving automation feature have to give a clear description of functions and limitations. Such a law will stop a manufacturer or dealer from actually marketing the feature.
Better Safeguards for Bicycle Riders (AB 1909, Friedman)
Drivers have to change into a newly available lane to avoid hitting cyclists as they pass by. Such a law also allows Class 3 e-bike riders to use the designated bicycle paths and trails.
Banning sideshows at Parking Facilities (AB 2000, Gabriel)
Parking lots with public roads are outlawing street racing and sideshows.
Slowing down Catalytic Converter Theft (SB 1087, Gonzalez, and AB 1740, Muratsuchi)
Such laws highlight requirements for recyclers to safeguard records of catalytic converters received to demotivate the parties that steal catalytic converters.
Remote Renewals for Some Transactions (SB 1193, Newman)
This particular law lets customers get their own DMV notices electronically. Pretty easy if you ask me, compared to going to the DMV in person.
Alts to Conventional License Placards (AB 984, Wilson)
Finally, the DMV is making a new ongoing program to let entities use alts for license plates, and even digitized registration cards. Hopefully, the DMV will clarify the work done on the electronic system so that the program can be made permanent.
